Demo Day!
A day we'd been waiting for (and had to postpone several times) was finally here! Say goodbye to almost everything in this picture: those upper cabinets, the wallpaper and hospital-green paint, that ridiculously small 80s dishwasher, the bulkhead above the cabinets, the scroll trim above the window, that floral backsplash, the amazing chandelier... oh, and the wall itself. All going, going, gone! In truth, it took several days to remove it all. Our house was built with extra-thick plaster and there was some sort of metal mesh embedded in the kitchen walls, so cutting though it caused sparks, instantly dull saw blades and more dust than you could possibly imagine.
The calm before the storm...
So dusty! But a truly exciting sign of progress.
The end of a truly exhausting Day One.
Such. A. Mess.
The end of Day of Day Two.
And then the clean-up began. We ended up hauling away something like 900 pounds of plaster, metal and wood... and it feels like there's at least that much weight in dust spread throughout the entire house. Demo is messy but so satisfying. And after a few days of electrical (all those tied-up wires need to be sorted out), we will officially move on to rebuilding!
