Out With The Old...
We had been promised that original hardwood floors were under all the white carpet in the living and dining rooms but it's one of those "wait-and-see/hope for the best" situations. I honestly couldn't want until the day we took possession, and we had our fingers crossed that a) the floors were there, and b) they were in decent shape.
It turns out they were in perfect shape! It was A LOT of carpet to remove but it was well worth it. All the floors needed was a good cleaning. Honestly, who has 50 year old wood floors without even a single scratch on them?! Us, that's who!
It did, however, force us to address another issue - the general colour of the house. At first glance, the entire house appeared to be white. How perfect! Maybe we wouldn't have to paint!
But once the carpet was removed, everything started to look yellow. We started systematically, room by room, painting the baseboards and trim a semi-gloss white (Decorator's White by Benjamin Moore). Which made the walls look really yellow, so then we admitted defeat and painted the living room the same white, in the eggshell finish.
We left the fireplace for a while though, just in case. After living with it for a while though, out came the white paint. Trust me, it was necessary.
[ Primed and ready for paint... stay tuned for that ! ]
Oh, and if you ever have 300 square feet of carpet that you want gone ASAP, post it as "free to a good home" on Kijiji. It'll be gone in 15 minutes.
